They will use a needle to enter the back of my pelvic bones to extract marrow from two tiny incisions there. They will enter the tiny incisions multiple times to extract from my bones because each draw can only accommodate so much fluid. As my patient is young and small, they need fewer stem cells than the average donation. I get general anesthesia for this unless I opt for an epidural. Apparently, when I wake up I will feel as if I’ve been hit by a horse, but that should go away in a few days because I am young and health questionnaire.

2012 Honda Civic Ahead of Frankfurt Motor Show

The new generation of the European market 2012 Honda Civic hatchback will make its world premiere tomorrow at the 64th International Auto Show in Frankfurt, but the Japanese company is giving us our first view of the car with the release of the official photographs.

The first thing you will notice about the 5-door Civic is of course its exterior styling. While Honda's designers kept the shape of the outgoing model intact, the devil is in the details, and whereas the previous Civic sported a futuristic styling with many creases and edges, its successor is frumpier with a lot more curves.

According to Honda, its designers "wanted to keep the sporty and advanced elements of the car's character but tailor them to express the new model's even more elegant yet dynamic feel", while the company adds that sources of inspiration included a "blended wing body" aeroplane (see picture below) in which the fuselage and wings blend into a single body.

Inside, the styling is very similar to the outgoing Civic 5d with a double layered dashboard combining both analogue and digital displays. Honda says it has improved interior quality as well as passenger space.

Under the sheetmetal, the ninth generation of the Civic sports a heavily revised version of the previous model's suspension system, which means it retains a rear torsion beam. Nevertheless, Honda's engineers claim that the reworked parts will improve the car's ride quality, comfort as well as handling and body control.

We're still waiting for more information on the available powertrains, but Honda previously disclosed that the 2012 Civic 5d will be offered with a revised 2.2-liter i-DTEC engine delivering 150HP, 10 more than the outgoing model's 2.2L CDTi unit. At the same time, CO2 emissions are down 29g/km to 110 g/km, 29 g/km.

Production of the European market hatchback will take place exclusively at Honda’s Swindon plant in the United Kingdom, with sales to start early next year.

We’re waiting for Honda to fully reveal the European market 2012 Civic hatchback, but the Japanese automaker announced that the five-door model will compete in the 2012 British Touring Car Championship.

Team Dynamics, will prepare two fully works cars based on the new Civic with which it hopes to repeat 2010’s success of winning both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ titles.

“We are delighted to enter the new Civic in next year’s BTCC and hope to build on the success we’ve had with the current model”, said managing director of Honda UK, Dave Hodgetts. “We’ve made significant improvements to the new road car, and we’re confident they will make for a competitive car too.”

Honda also released the first in a line of four videos called “What Drives a Racing Team”. The video, which you can watch below, shows the way the racing team works during the season.

We began driving with the instrument panel predicting about 16 miles of range, and all was normal until the range indicator hit eight miles and began blinking and a voice chimed in, "Low battery charge." If those warnings weren't enough, the Leaf's main instrument panel illuminated a red gas pump icon and filled the trip computer's display with the words "Battery level is low." A general warning icon appeared in the upper-tier instrument panel, closer to one's line of sight, and even the center touch-screen navigation system had a "Low Battery" flag, which you could press to get a full-screen warning and the option to search for nearby charging stations.

I don't know what more Nissan could have done to warn the driver, short of applying a mild electric shock, but that wouldn't help the range issue.

At a range of roughly four miles, the voice warned, "Very low battery charge. Would you like to search for a nearby charging station?" The range indicator no longer showed a number at all, as if to say, "You're on your own." We had traveled roughly 16 miles at this point, so we were flying blind. The LCD screen had popped up a warning window with the option to search for a charging station. We hit the yes button, and the closest location was multimedia editor Eric Rossi's house that was 5.9 miles away. The car had automatically stored the location the first time it charged there.

Would we make it? Well, that wasn't the goal; we wanted to kill it, so we stuck to side roads, not wanting to push it off a highway. Minutes ticked by. The moderate speeds and cool weather kept the Leaf going and going, and we began to wonder if our 6.4-liter V-8-powered Dodge Challenger chase car would run out of fuel first.

After about four more miles, we reached the final milestone — the elusive turtle mode. The warning voice said, "Power output is being limited." The trip computer display cycled between "Motor power is limited" and "Battery level is low," and an orange turtle icon (or is it a tortoise?) appeared front and center.

The power was indeed limited. The Leaf accelerated at a rate of roughly 1 mph per second, so the fastest I ever got it going on side streets was 30 mph between stop signs. This mode is intended exclusively to get you to the side of the road, not to continue driving. We continued driving.

We got more than another mile out of the Leaf, finally coming to rest at the top of a modest incline having traveled 21.6 miles since the experiment began. The car went into Neutral and wouldn't go back into Drive or Reverse. Cars.com had killed the electric car. The lights and all instruments stayed on, and the air conditioning continued blowing.

At 3:45 p.m. I phoned roadside assistance and pressed 1 to indicate a dead battery, wondering if it represented the conventional battery or EV type. A live operator came on and asked all the relevant questions. She said towing was covered under warranty and we would be towed to a Nissan dealer. I asked if we could instead be brought to Eric's house, a mere 2 miles away. She said yes, any distance less than 50 miles is allowed.

Transfers. The word brings to mind the recent football transfer deadline day that saw plenty of wheeling dealing and shocking deals. Personally, I still can’t get over the fact that Arsene Wenger actually splashed some cash on not one, two or three, but five players. So perhaps the trashing by United was a blessing in disguise!

In the local drift scene, Goodyear Malaysia has made a great new signing as well. The team recently welcomed veteran drifter Tan Tat Wei into the fold. Now, as anyone who follows the scene will know, TTW is no stranger to winning and the podium, and is one of the big names in the drift circle. His loud rotary powered AE86 is equally famous.

The former Bridgestone backed man is a coup for Goodyear, and will join teammates Ariff Johanis Ahmad, Azrina Jane Abdullah, Hanizam Hamzah and Michael Gan. As part of Team Goodyear, drifters receive tyre sponsorships for a predetermined number of drift competitions, partial upgrading of vehicle and maintenance. In return, besides to do their best, they are required to conduct demonstrations at Goodyear events.

“It is truly an honor and pleasure to be affiliated with Team Goodyear. The association is one that has already begun to create a great deal of opportunity for me and has open many doors since I first joined them eight months ago. Jaguar E-Type Series 2

Manufactured in April 1969 and first registered ‘XKL 111′, this E-Type Series 2 Coupé was used as a demonstrator by Jaguar agents J R J Mansbridge of Lincoln before being supplied to one W P Miller of Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire via Richard A Bellamy of Grismby. The car was originally finished in light blue with red interior.
The E-Type underwent a full ‘last nut and bolt’ restoration in the early 2000s but unfortunately was involved in an accident that damaged the front end, resulting in the need for a new bonnet and engine sub-frame (the bulkhead was undamaged).

In September 2005 Mr Roy Ellis purchased the car from a Universal Vehicle Salvage auction. Classed as a Category C write-off (‘an extensively damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road’) it was then restored by John Houghton Mechanical Services in Ilminster using components supplied by various specialists including SC Parts, David Manners, SNG Barrett and Martin Robey.

The current vendor purchased the E-Type in February 2009 and since then has carried out further restoration. There are receipts on file totalling circa £15,000 from Savernake Auto Services for a remanufactured front sub-frame, while a new bonnet was purchased from Racing Jaguar Panels at a cost of £3,218. The latter was then painted by Brookfield Classics of Hinckley, Leicestershire at a cost of £2,530. In addition, all the running gear, suspension and brakes have been restored and the electrics checked and re-wired wherever necessary. The interior is mostly new, with some areas refurbished.

On completion of the repairs the car was submitted for a DVLA Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) and passed successfully, enabling the VIC marker to be removed from the database and a V5C registration document issued. Then, in April 2011, the engine was overhauled (including hardened valve seats) tuned and serviced (photographs on file).

Finished in British Racing Green with cream leather interior, ‘JVL 749G’ currently displays a total of 66,354 miles on the odometer and is described as ‘nearly concours’ by the vendor, with relatively little work required to bring it to perfection. ‘On the button’ and ready to enjoy, this well prepared E-Type is offered with a most substantial file of invoices and restoration photographs, VIC pass, current road fund licence, MoT to 18th November 2011 and Swansea V5C registration document.

ส่วนความกว้างขวางภายในห้องโดยสารของ มาสด้า 2 นั้น พอใช้ได้ครับ แต่อาจจะดูกระชับไปหน่อย ซึ่งก็ต้องยอมรับว่ามาจากการออกแบบที่ทำให้เป็นรถกึ่งสปอร์ตหน่อยๆ ทำให้ภายในของ มาสด้า 2 ดูเล็กกว่า นิสสัน มาร์ช ซึ่งในส่วนของผู้โดยสารตอนหน้า ไม่มีปัญหาครับ นั่งกันได้สบายๆ แต่ในส่วนของผู้โดยสารตอนหลัง ดูจะคับแคบไปนิด เมื่อเทียบกับ นิสสัน มาร์ช

ซึ่งในเรื่องของอัตราสิ้นเปลืองนั้น นิสสัน มาร์ช ประหยัดกว่าแน่นอน แต่บอกว่าประหยัดมากถึงขนาดที่เป็นจุดเด่นหรือเปล่า ผมเฉยๆ ครับ ไม่ถือว่าประหยัดมากมายนัก แต่ในทางกลับกัน ในส่วนของ มาสด้า 2 ซีดาน กลับสิ้นเปลืองมากกว่าที่คิดครับ เพราะผมคิดว่าอัตราสิ้นเปลืองของ มาสด้า 2 ซีดาน เกียร์ธรรมดา น่าจะอยู่ที่ประมาณ 14 กิโลเมตรต่อลิตร

I just bought a 2010 Toyota Camry Hybrid last Sunday. This Thursday morning, the dealer called to tell me there is a recall on the gas pedal. First of all, I asked if this was fixed, and they said this car was not involved. And second, since that was not true, can I take this vehicle back because they sold me a recalled vehicle?

The 2010 Toyota Camry Hybrid was recalled Nov. 23 for floormat entrapment under the accelerator pedal, not for the sticking accelerator pedal recall announced Jan. 21. According to Toyota, "the dealer can sell the vehicle if no floor mats are installed or if they are semi-permanently attached using plastic staples. There is no stop-sale required by NHTSA for Camry for this particular recall, because removal of the floor mats ensures that the pedal cannot be entrapped."

The recall for your Camry Hybrid will include reshaping the accelerator pedal, modifying the padding under the carpet and replacing the original front floormats with ones that can be used on either side of the vehicle and can be turned over. "Our hybrids already have a form of brake override, in that the electrical system limits power to protect the components," Toyota spokesman Mike Michels said when asked if a brake override system would be added as part of that recall, like it is for other non-hybrid Camrys.

2010 hasn't been a good year for the Prius, and it now looks like things are going to get worst for this once popular and much loved little hybrid as more problems creep up.

Prius didn't show up to the Oscars

Every year you would find a host of celebrities grace the red carpet after stepping out of their Prius. From Harrison Ford and Leonardo Di Caprio, to this year's Oscar Winner Sandra Bullock, they all owned a Prius and were well-known for making a 'green carpet' entrance. But this year not a single Prius was in sight. Instead celebrities were seen sporting Toyota Camry and Cadillac Escalade hybrids.

Sales and production of Prius drops

Dealerships across the state have been trying to clear their showroom floors of the Prius by offering heavy discounts. Unfortunately this wasn't enough to curb decreasing sales and Toyota has decided to cut down on Prius production by 10% this month.

Why the recall didn't help the Prius

Toyota Camry hybrid sales took a sting after Toyota's 8 million recall debacle but it quickly bounced back. So why not the Prius? Call it bad luck. Newspapers have been frequently reporting on runaway Prius cars causing damage and injuring its passengers. Just this week alone we heard of a women in CA who slammed her Prius into a brick wall because the accelerator stuck, and another case in NY where a real estate agent lost control of his Prius after leaving from a meeting with his lawyer (this one sounds a little fishy). While we cannot say with full certainty whether these Prius accidents were really caused by insufficient recall fixes or just plain driver error, it's still enough to put
consumers off from buying the Toyota Prius.

Chevy Volt takes aim at the Prius

With the Prius removed from most hybrid buyer's shopping list, it might be up to the 'next best thing' to fill this void. And at the moment it seems to be the Chevy Volt. It's show booth at the SXSW 2010 Festival was apparently a huge hit this year, while the Prius booth got very little attention from the 12,000+ tech savvy visitors.

Lexus CT200h Hybrid Entry Luxury Fighting. An anonymous source has e-mailed what appears to be a digital press kit produced by Lexus for next week’s Geneva Motor Show. The pages of the kit reveal photos and details of the Lexus CT 200h five-door hybrid, set for a debut at the Geneva event.

Based on the LF-Ch concept from Frankfurt, the five-door hybrid is driven by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and magnet synchronous electric motor, which channel momentum to the front axle via a electrically-controlled contiously variable transmission. The motor is powered by a nickel-metal hydride battery. The car features four driving modes: EV, Eco, Normal and Sport. Coming in smaller than the Prius, the CT 200h measures 4,320mm x 1,765mm x 1,430mm (l x w x h).

Because we are talking about Lexus, the powertrain is hybrid, first violin being the 1.8 VVT-i engine and accompanied by an electric motor. The exact power is not specified, but in the brochure tis said that this model will have three running modes: Eco, Normal and Sport and that it will prove that hybrids can be athletes. The transmission will be continuously variable and will be called the E-CVT.

Hyundai has today revealed the first photo of the all-new concept car i-flow (HED-7), ahead of its international debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week. The i-flow, which advances the ‘fluidic sculpture’ form language of Hyundai, will be joined on stage by other newcomers, including the facelifted i30 – to be launched as i30U – and a number of new, production-ready derivatives with CO2 emissions below 100g/km.

Previewing a future D-segment contender from Hyundai, i-flow boasts sleek, elegant lines which not only create a bionic, futuristic shape, but also contribute to exceptional aerodynamics. The drag coefficient of 0.25Cd helps to reduce the car’s CO2 output to just 85g/km and fuel consumption to only 3l/100km.

Hyundai’s first diesel-electric hybrid powertrain is a key factor in delivering such an environmentally-conscious return. The exciting new U2 1,7-liter engine is augmented by two-stage turbocharging and Hyundai’s Lithium Ion-Polymer battery, to give a very efficient and advanced combination, partnered with a six-speed, dual-clutch transmission.

The new arrivals will drive the company towards its goal of global leadership in environmentally-sensitive automotive technologies.

Through innovations such as a stop-start system, low-rolling-resistance tyres and modified aerodynamics, the first four of these cars have CO2 emissions below 100g/km. The ix35 blue, meanwhile, boasts an impressive 135g/km ?a benchmark figure for a C-segment SUV. These improvements are achieved without compromising performance, reliability or driver satisfaction, making all Blue DriveTM models a realistic solution for motorists.

Looking one step beyond the blue-badged models, the ix35 FCEV moves Hyundai closer to the commercialization of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. Debuting at Geneva, it features several important innovations over the previous-generation Tucson FCEV, and will lead to production volume of Hyundai FCEVs in the thousands by 2012. It is known in some other markets as the Nissan March and is currently in its 3rd generation model. Prices start from £7995, and the car is available in either 3 or 5 door hatchback versions.

Nissan Micra C+C

The Nissan Micra C+C is a coupe-convertible version of the Micra hatchback with a folding hardtop that has been becoming increasingly popular in recent times. It is very definitely seen as having a "girls car" image, reinforced by TV coverage at launch on the Top Gear TV show where a fluorescent pink one was road tested. the Micra C+C competes with rivals such as the Peugeot 207 CC for sales.

Nissan Note

The Nissan Note was jointly developed with Renault and shares a lot of engines and the chassis with the Renault Modus. It is a compact people carrier with an overall length similar to a supermini, but with individual seats and a high roof line, designed for family transportation. It is available with a choice of a 1.4 or 1.6 petrol engine or a 1.5 turbo diesel unit, and costs from £9990.

Nissan 350Z

The Nissan 350Z is a 2 seater sports car available as either a coupe or convertible that builds on the heritage of the Datsun and Nissan Z cars that have been popular since the 240Z was introduced in 1969. It is shortly to be replaced by the new 370Z model that builds on the same chassis. The 350Z uses a 3.5 litre V6 normally aspirated petrol engine and the car is said to have excellent sports handling and performance and being a Nissan it is considerably cheaper than rivals such as the BMW Z4 and Porsche Cayman.

Nissan GT-R

The Nissan GT-R is Nissan's flagship model that proves just how technologically capable the brand is. It is the latest in a line of cars that came from the Japanese market Skyline model, and originally was known as the Skyline GT-R. It has always been fitted with an advanced 4 wheel drive system controlled by sophisticated electronics, and a medium capacity engine with a powerful turbocharger strapped to it, enabling easy tuning with some previous models being taken to over 1000 horsepower by their owners. The current model has 480 horsepower as standard, and competed head on with the Porsche 911 Turbo for ability, despite being nearly 40 thousand pounds cheaper.

Nissan Qashqai

The Nissan Qashqai is a crossover vehicle designed to sit between somewhere between a family hatchback, a people carrier and an off road 4x4. It has the looks of a 4x4 and an elevated driving position but in a somewhat smaller package, meaning that parking, fuel consumption etc. are all more comparable to a mid sized hatchback, and acknowledges the fact that owners are unlikely to ever take the car off road, so is based around urban capabilities.

Nissan Qashqai+2

The Nissan Qashqai+2 is a slightly larger extended Qashqai model that has as the name suggests, room for an extra 2 seats in the back making it a full 7 seat family car rather than a 5 seater like the original. In most other respects it is virtually identical to its smaller brother - engines, chassis etc, and costs a small premium over the basic model for the extra space.

Nissan Murano

The Nissan Murano is a full sized 4 wheel drive that competes with the likes of the BMW X5 and Mercedes M-Class, yet avoids the traditional chunky squared off big off-road styling which is backed up by the cars firm on-road focus. It shares the same engine as the 350Z with a big 3.5 litre V6 motor, which does hamper the sales in the diesel orientated UK market.

Nissan X-Trail

The Nissan X-Trail is a compact 4x4 that sells against the Land Rover Freelander, Honda CR-V etc. It is only currently available with a 2.0 litre diesel engine with 173 horsepower, and costs from £22340 in the UK. The current version has been enlarged over the previous model to give space for the smaller Qashqai in the range.

Nissan Pathfinder

The Nissan Pathfinder is based on the Nissan Navara double cab commercial vehicle but with a full working boot. It has the same styling, chassis interior and engines as the Navara.

Nissan Patrol

The Nissan Patrol is much more of a traditional 4x4 with full off road ability to compete with other four wheel drives such as the Mitsubishi Shogun and the Toyota Hi-Lux. It uses a separate ladder chassis to its body and several electrical and mechanical off road systems.

Now in its fourth model year since its last redesign, the 2010 Toyota Camry received a number of mechanical and styling tweaks as part of a mid-cycle update. The Camry Hybrid's drivetrain carries over unchanged, but it does get a few more unique styling cues.

The non-hybrid Camry, whose mechanical tweaks increase highway mileage to 33 mpg in some configurations, is covered separately in Cars.com's Research section. Competitors of the Camry Hybrid include the Ford Fusion Hybrid, Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid and Nissan Altima Hybrid.

Exterior
The Camry Hybrid's tweaks are more noticeable than the regular Camry's. Its face sports a more aggressive look, with a larger center air dam that dominates the lower bumper. Fog lights sit within vertically slotted outboard sections, and last year's bladed grille has been replaced with a single unit. Both the grille and bumper differ noticeably from the non-hybrid Camry's, which wasn't the case before.

Sixteen-inch alloy wheels are standard.

Interior
The cabin carries over largely untouched. The stereo offers USB compatibility for enhanced integration with iPods and other MP3 players. Express up/down operation for all windows, a feature typically reserved for premium brands, is now standard. The car can have leather upholstery, heated power seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and a navigation system.

Rather than a conventional tachometer, the Camry Hybrid includes a gas mileage gauge. Toyota says the gauges have a new design. With the navigation system, the center display can show power flow between different drivetrain components.

Although the rear seats fold down, the trunk pass-thru is quite small. Due to the drivetrain's high-voltage battery pack, which sits behind the rear seats, overall luggage volume is less than the regular Camry's.

Under the Hood
A 2.4-liter four-cylinder running on a more efficient Atkinson cycle couples with an electric motor to produce a combined 187 horsepower. Drawing power from a dedicated battery that recharges off braking friction, the drivetrain can run solely on electric power at low speeds, and it nets an EPA-estimated 33/34 mpg city/highway.

Safety
Seven standard airbags include a driver's knee airbag, side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain airbags for both rows. Four-wheel-disc antilock brakes, traction control and an electronic stability system are also standard. Toyota's Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system proactively governs the stability and traction systems to maintain control; it's a feature unavailable on the regular Camry Hybrid.

Nova: Car of the Future

Let me mention the worst part of this documentary first: the silliness of brothers Tom and Ray in this program. This program addresses a lot of highly scientific and economic matters that would confuse the average viewer. So they include two DJs on a show called "Car Talk" to lighten the tone. Unfortunately, things are presented as spontaneous which are clearly scripted. Tom and Ray are supposed to be an ideal comic couple like Abbott and Costello or Redman and Method Man, but their presence is just ridiculously extraneous. They present themselves as common men, but they quickly mention that they are MIT alumnae. At one point, one of them has to be bleeped out for cursing. Notice carefully and one of them even makes a fart joke!

Silliness aside, this was a powerful work. We know modern cars are ruining the environment and that petroleum is finite. However, alternatives are often too expensive, dangerous, or unrealistic. They show that Iceland is experimenting with hydrogen-powered transportation, but they have enough energy from geysers to pull that off. Plus, their population is small (and probably not as violent as that of my country, the US). One expert said, "There's not enough land to grow corn and corn is already needed for food." One scientist said, "If we could only produce a living being that works like these two separate microbes do, we'd quicken the process twice." Hello! Horses and eagles are great, but I doubt anyone will make a pegasus to solve our transportation problems!!! Still, I love the way this work gives hope. There are scientists working on solutions. There are consumers willing to pay for pricey cars now which will eventually pay off in the future.

As much as I loved this work, it could have benefited from pointing the blame some. The work does say Americans are driving huge cars, wrongfully, because they make them feel safe. However, the work says nothing on how the steel industry wants car companies to buy their outdated steel, rather than work on developing sleek alternatives. Detroit car companies were told that consumers were sick of inefficient gas guzzlers, but they kept producing the same, old rubbish while Asian companies were addressing consumer concerns. Car companies could legitimately say, "We could change X, but it sure would mean that we'll have to fire thousands of workers." There are villains in this controversy and the documentary says little about them, or oops, maybe us!

John Lithgow narrated this. I love his neighborly, good guy persona. However, I did feel like the main character of "Third Rock from the Sun" was speaking to me. Some like narrators who disappear into the background and that didn't happen here.

I don't know if this work underestimated things or was prescient. It says "We may have competition for gas from China." Well, we DO have that competition. It says, "This problem MAY lead to an economic crisis." Well, we DO have an economic crisis now. The future is today and this documentary seems unaware of it.

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announces its production and sales subsidiary in India unveiled today—under the banner: “World First, India First”—a concept version of the “Etios*”, a compact car newly developed specifically for the Indian market. Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private, Ltd. (TKM) is showing the concept car at the 10th Auto Expo automobile show in New Delhi, which runs until January 11.

The Toyota Etios is aimed at family users in India’s rapidly growing automobile market. Reflecting its “one class above” theme, the Etios’ styling evokes a sense of advanced status, and, along with a spacious interior with abundant storage space, it aims to offer both smooth and powerful driving and excellent fuel efficiency. To make the car as affordable as possible for potential customers, thorough use of local parts will be pursued to keep costs low. On display at the show are a sedan version with a newly developed 1.5-liter gasoline engine and a hatchback version with a newly developed 1.2-liter gasoline engine.

Etios chief engineer, Yoshinori Noritake, said at the show: “I visited many Indian cities and homes to learn the market and to hear from the consumer directly. Over four years, more than 2,000 engineers have been involved in the development of the Etios, and each has devoted his or her best effort with no compromises. I am convinced in my heart that the Etios offers joy of ownership and quality of life to consumers in India.”

TKM will produce the Etios from late 2010 at its second plant, which is now being built expressly for the new car. Annual sales in India are set at 70,000 units Toyota Etios. Exports are planned.

At the show, the TKM exhibit, with its key message of “Quality Revolution”, comprises a total of 14 production and concept vehicles, including the third-generation “Prius” gasoline-electric hybrid passenger car, which is scheduled to go on sale in India in 2010, the “Prado” SUV recently unveiled for the Indian market, the “i-REAL” personal mobility vehicle and the “Fine-S” fuel-cell hybrid vehicle. Geely bid to Volvo

Ford Motor Company [NYSE: F] announced today that a consortium led by Zhejiang Geely Group Holding Co. Ltd. is its preferred bidder in the ongoing discussions concerning the possible sale of Volvo Car Corporation.

Ford said that while it will be engaging in more detailed and focused negotiations with Geely, no final decisions have been made.

“Ford’s objective in our discussions with Geely is to secure an agreement that is in the best interests of all the parties,” said Lewis Booth, Ford Motor Company executive vice president and chief financial officer. “Any prospective sale would have to ensure that Volvo has the resources, including the capital investment, necessary to further strengthen the business and build its global franchise, while enabling Ford to continue to focus on and implement our core ONE Ford strategy.

“Ford believes Geely has the potential to be a responsible future owner of Volvo and to take the business forward while preserving its core values and the independence of the Swedish brand. But there is much work that needs to be completed in the more substantive discussions that are agreed to take place. We have no specific timeline to conclude the discussions.”

While Ford would continue to cooperate with Volvo in several areas after a possible sale, Ford said it does not intend to retain a shareholding in Volvo.

John Fleming, chairman of Ford of Europe and Volvo Cars, said: “Ford fully understands the iconic Swedish nature of the Volvo brand and the responsibility we have as Volvo’s custodian to its employees, local communities and other key stakeholders.

“Any sale also would need to take into account the significant connections between Ford and Volvo in terms of continuing component supply, engineering and manufacturing.”

Ford and Volvo will maintain appropriate communications with key stakeholders, such as Volvo’s employees, unions and the Swedish government, during the ongoing process.

“Volvo’s management team welcomes today’s announcement as a positive step forward,” Volvo CEO Stephen Odell said. “At Volvo, we are continuing to keep our attention firmly fixed on engineering and building great Volvo cars, to reduce our cost base and to return the business to sustainable profitability at the earliest possible opportunity.”

Sleek, stylish and sporty, both the four-door sedan and five-door hatchback body styles of the next-generation Focus are previewed prior to their production start for Europe and North America late in 2010 and market launch early in 2011.

The new Focus will be nearly identical in all markets, with 80 percent parts commonality around the world.
“The new Ford Focus is a clear demonstration that our ONE Ford strategy is providing global consumers with great products that harness the best of Ford Motor Company,” said Alan Mulally, Ford’s president and CEO.

Simultaneous launch in Europe and North America
Production of the next-generation Ford Focus will begin simultaneously in Europe and North America in late 2010, with individual market launches starting early in 2011. Launches in Asia, Africa and South America will follow. Initial production will be concentrated at the Saarlouis (Germany), Michigan (United States) and Chongqing (China) Assembly Plants.

The new Focus will be one of up to 10 unique models to be built from Ford’s new C-car platform, which is expected to generate total sales in all regions of 2 million units annually by 2012. The first of these will be the new Ford C-MAX and Ford Grand C-MAX – unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show – for launch in Europe in the second half of 2010.

The global powertrain lineup for the new Focus will include a range of state-of-the-art Ford EcoBoostTM four-cylinder turbocharged direct injection (DI) engines – including the 1.6-liter unit in Europe and a choice of advanced and improved Duratorq TDCi common-rail diesel engines, all of which offer reductions in fuel consumption of between 10 and 20 percent compared to the outgoing models.

For the NAIAS preview, Ford is showing a completely new 2.0-liter gasoline engine for the North American market that features DI and Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) for enhanced performance and fuel efficiency. The new 2.0-liter DI Ti-VCT engine is up to 20 horsepower more powerful than the current 2.0 Duratec I-4 unit while contributing to projected fuel economy gains of more than 10 percent.

To maximize the performance and economy advantage enjoyed by the new Focus, the 2.0-liter DI Ti-VCT engine is mated with the latest dry-clutch six-speed Ford PowerShift automatic transmission. This transmission uses an advanced dual-clutch design, which alone can help to reduce fuel consumption by up to 9 percent compared to a traditional four-speed automatic.

The dry-clutch PowerShift transmission is based on more efficient manual gearbox technology, and does not require the additional weight and complexity of torque converters, planetary gears and oil pumps used in conventional automatics. Electronically controlled twin clutches shift gears quickly and smoothly, providing the seamless flow of torque plus the refinement and ease of operation customers expect from a premium automatic transmission.

Ford also has confirmed plans to begin building a full, battery electric vehicle in 2011 at its Michigan Assembly Complex, for sales in North America. It will be the company’s first battery electric passenger vehicle.

The next-generation Focus will bring C-segment customers around the world an exciting array of advanced technologies generally found in larger, more premium vehicles. A-platform original named cut cost and cut weight 50 kg off. Nissan has revealed the first details of its new global small car project at a briefing at its new global headquarters in Yokohama, Japan.

The new ‘V-platform’ project has been designed primarily to make financial sense in emerging markets, while being sophisticated enough for Western Europe Nissan V-platform.

The new supermini will sit on all-new Nissan V-platform – the V standing for versatile – which is lighter and roomier than before. It will spawn a saloon model (destined for emerging markets such as India and China) and an MPV too, replacing the popular Note in late 2011.

The Nissan V-platform will underpin cars up to 1600kg in weight and with a maximum torque output of 148lb ft. This means that the largest engine fitted to the family of small cars will be a 1.5-litre turbodiesel unit.

Engineered by Nissan in Japan, the Nissan V-platform project focuses on reductions in both weight and in the number of components that make up the future models.

The V-cars have 18 per cent fewer parts than Nissan’s previous small cars, the company says. The complete dashboard assembly is made up of just 28 parts instead of 56 and the seats are now made up of 50 parts, down from 85.

The V platform’s weight reduction was achieved by reducing the number of components and simplifying the car’s systems – for example, the new exhaust system is 3kg lighter than in the current car, the fuel tank is smaller and 2.2kg lighter, while the number of components that make up the cockpit module were halved.

Nissan says the new car will be very fuel efficient, but would not be drawn if that would mean the car would have engine stop-start technology, or whether a hybrid version would be made, but conceded that this might be possible.

The majority of Nissan V-platform cars will be powered by new ‘low-friction’ three-cylinder engines, which Autocar understands will come in 0.9- and 1.2-litre capacities. It’s possible most versions of the motor will get turbochargers.

Nissan engineers say the combination of lightweight engineering and torquey engines could deliver significantly better fuel economy than rival vehicles.

The company has also engineered a new, very compact, ‘low-friction’ CVT transmission, which has a much higher top ratio than normal.

The V-platform has been primarily engineered for comfort on the demanding roads in emerging markets such as India and China. For Western versions of the V-cars, extra emphasis will be placed on more refinement and body control.

The new model will not be built at Nissan’s Sunderland plant, but instead will be produced at a variety of factories in emerging markets including Thailand – where it will be first launched in March 2010 – and India.

This approach will help Nissan to keep costs down – so expect the new Micra to be very competitvely priced when it goes on sale here, most likely just in five-door form (a three-door has yet to be confirmed) in October 2010 as Nissan V-platform.

More auto makers are embracing green technology. The question is whether there will be enough demand at the right prices to save the global auto industry. And whether it can be done without the industry being on the drip of taxpayer-funded assistance.

Holden this week announced the release of two new fuel efficient V6 engines. Holden chairman and managing director Mark Reuss seemed to suggest it was the way of the future.

Meanwhile, Nissan has unveiled a new battery-powered electric car called the Leaf, seating five adults, with a top speed of about 90 miles per hour (or about 145 km). The car comes with a battery which recharges over eight hours on a power socket. Just plug it in overnight and off you go.

And Ford has decided to focus on building more fuel efficient versions of its Sedan and Territory off-roader. And then of course, there is the industry pioneer, the Toyota Prius, which according to news reports is helping Toyota keep a lid on its losses. Orders for the new Prius are running way ahead of expectations.

There is no doubt green cars sales will boom over the next few years because of pressure to reduce carbon emissions and volatile oil prices. According to this analyst’s report, Toyota and Honda are leading the way but other car makers are queuing up. The report says the industry will have a compound annual growth rate of 20 per cent during 2009-2012.

That said, concerns are being raised about the extensive level of government required to bankroll the production of green cars. The Australian argues that the Rudd Government’s $1.3 billion green car innovation fund will do nothing and is just propping up an industry.

Does the car actually have much of a future in today’s market? People are driving less and they’re certainly not rushing out to buy new cars, green or otherwise, with the latest figures showing that auto sales dropped 10 per cent in July.

It's seems an unlikely combination, but is the deal between Toyota and Aston Martin, announced yesterday, such a bad idea? Under the plan, Aston Martin will sell a version of the tiny Toyota iQ (pictured above) called the Cygnet to existing clients. The price is likely to be around $30,000. "Small is beautiful these days,” Ulrich Bez, Aston Martin’s chief executive said yesterday reports the Times of London. “We have to move on from the preconceived ideas regarding what Aston Martin is about.”

Predictably, most comments on car blogs have been pretty harsh, ranging from outright rage to disbelief. But why not? The iQ, while not exactly a popular sight on Japan's roads--I think I've seen four since it was released late last year--is a fun, innovative car. From Toyota's point of view, even a small association with a brand like Aston Martin, won't do any harm. New president Akio Toyoda insisted on June 25, at his first press conference as Toyota chief, that cars must be more than just appliances for getting from A to B.

Interestingly, the move seems to have stemmed from a racing friendship built up between Toyoda and Bez. At the June 25 press conference, the Japanese exec name-checked Bez when asked about his love of racing. Under the pseudonym Morizo, Toyoda has been known (most recently in May) to drive a Lexus LF-A in races at Germany's Nürburgring circuit. Bez, a fellow racer, got in touch with Toyoda after seeing an iQ on show at the track. When asked if he would quit racing now he is boss of the world's biggest carmaker, Toyoda admitted his colleagues were urging him to hang up his racing overalls but (somewhat unconvincingly) said that driving around the 'Ring was a good way to test new cars. If the Aston Martin deal works out, perhaps he can use that as an additional argument if he wants to keep racing.

In Detroit’s hey day, American cars were been fawned over in rock and roll tunes both for their brawny performance and cultural significance. Songs like Bruce Springsteen’s “Cadillac Ranch” glorified big, ostentatious Caddies. “Hot Rod Lincoln” by Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen did far more as an homage to horsepower and a polish job for Ford’s luxury brand than it did for the band’s career. But the same can’t be said for the Chevy Camaro.

The most recognizable tune I can think of is the ‘80s punk ditty “Bitchin’ Camaro” by the Dead Milkmen. In the tune, the Milkmen lampoon the Camaro as a car for rich spoiled kids who guzzle gas and tear up their neighbor’s yard. It’s the hood ornament for crass American suburbia. Here’s a clip of the lyrics:

For much of its history, the Camaro was a gaudy guzzler for the buzz cut and gold chains crowd. The cars were usually fast, but also inexpensive and unsophisticated. So, frankly, when GM announced two years ago that Chevy would bring the car back, I was very skeptical. It arrives later than Ford’s Mustang and Chrysler’s Challenger. And let’s face it, reborn muscle cars preach to the 50-something guys who already buy American brands, not the import owners that Detroit needs to win back to survive. It sends a signal to people shopping for Bimmers, Hyundais, Priuses and the like that Detroit is stuck in 1970.

But after driving the new Camaro, I have to erase all of that. The car is simply terrific. And it’s far more sophisticated in many ways that competing cars and certainly than the old Camaros. Start with the engine. My test model had a direct-injection V6 which kicks 304 horsepower but gets 29 mpg on the highway. All that grunt still guzzles 19 mpg in the city, but a combined 22 or 23 mpg for a car with that much oomph is impressive. You can get a V8 in the SS version, but it starts at $31,000. The V6 models start at $23,000

Then take a look at the car. Love the design or hate it, you have to say that it’s not just reproduced retro. Chrysler simply knocked off a 1970 Challenger. The Camaro looks like a new-era interpretation of the old pony car. If GM never killed it, the Camaro may have just evolved into this design today. It’s fresh. The Camaro really handles quite well, too. At 3,700 pounds it doesn’t feel as heavy as other big sporty cars.

The cabin is decidedly retro and not the car’s best feature. GM took many cues from the early ‘70s cars. And while the plastics inside don’t feel top grade, they’re good enough for a car that starts at $23,000 and offers as much as it does in terms of performance and style. My test car, by the way, was about $30,000 loaded up with satellite radio, blue tooth, stability control and a nine-speaker Boston Acoustics sound system.

Still, the new Camaro is a very impressive car. I was surprised by how much I liked it. I’ve never been a Camaro guy. But I was also suspect of how GM would execute it. When Pontiac brought back the GTO in 2004, GM was content to take a ‘90s jelly bean body style from its Australian unit, shove a big engine under the hood and call it reborn muscle. It didn’t last. This is a purpose-built muscle car for a new age, and quite a good way to usher in the New GM assuming the company emerges from bankruptcy in a couple of months as planned.

Don't count on the Chevrolet Volt to rescue General Motors. The extended-range electric car is a fascinating science project and great for wowing policy makers, but few car enthusiasts are that committed to saving the planet. What most of us want is a sexy-hot ride that doesn't cost a fortune. Enter the reborn Chevy Camaro - the ultimate red-blooded, blue-collar fashion statement and GM's best hope of driving itself out of the ditch.

The Camaro's six-year absence really did make hearts yearn for a Ford Mustang foil. Dodge's Challenger revival eased some of that ache, but true Chevy fans would sooner pine for the old days than defect. After GM announced that the Camaro concept wasn't a tease, 14,000 believers affirmed their faith by placing orders.

Now that GM's Oshawa, Ontario, assembly plant is cranking out cars, we've test-driven V-6 and V-8 versions of the fifth-generation Camaro. Our first revelation: Chevy has mounted a classic Trojan horse offense. Under its 1969-esque cover, the Camaro is armed with such 2009 weapons as direct injection (V-6 only), an independent rear suspension, and six speeds in every transmission. Chevy's strategy is to reward the faithful and to lure fresh recruits away from imports.

The irony is that true import flavor is part of the Camaro's recipe. Four years ago, Bob Lutz and GM design chief Ed Welburn cooked up this car as a buzz builder and Chevy brand resuscitator. After their 2006 Detroit auto show concept rocked the car world, the business case supporting a production model gained momentum. GM's Holden division in Australia offered two vital resources: a can-do attitude and a global rear-wheel-drive chassis code-named Zeta that arrived here last year beneath the Pontiac G8.

To deliver a Camaro that held true to the Lutz-Welburn inspiration, GM engineers in Michigan and Melbourne hewed a tight coupe out of the large G8 sedan by moving the Zeta rear axle forward six inches. To clear the room needed for twenty-inch wheels and tires, the front suspension was moved forward, track widths were increased, and the windshield was shifted rearward and given a more upright stance. After revised suspension geometries, larger brakes, and other changes were added, the Camaro's Zeta Two underpinnings shared little with the G8's Zeta One blueprints other than common engineering.

Concurrently, the V-8-powered concept was expanded into a full range of meek-to-mean Camaros. The menu includes LS, LT, and SS series with two trim levels, three engines, four transmissions, and two suspensions, plus an RS package consisting of twenty-inch wheels and tires, HID headlamps, and a rear spoiler. Prices run from $22,995 for the stripped LS V-6 to more than $37,000 for a well-equipped SS V-8..

Last year, after driving a Camaro LT powered by the direct-injection 3.6-liter V-6, we concluded that 304 hp serves as an excellent starting point. Now we can report that the six-speed-stick LT squirts to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds - matching Hyundai's hottest Genesis coupe - on its way to a 14.8-second, 98-mph quarter-mile dash. The refined howl under the hood is the entry-level Camaro speaking softly while wielding a decent performance stick, including 17/26 EPA city/highway gas mileage. Equipped with a six-speed automatic, the LS and LT Camaros score an even better 18/29 mpg rating in EPA tests.

The Camaro's cockpit has a bunker vibe inflicted by the high-rise beltline, tall hood, and a roof that curves over your ears. The bucket seats are squishy soft and lacking in both lateral and lumbar support. Releasing one lever allows tilting and telescoping of the dished steering wheel, but a clunky adjuster mechanism takes a bite out of knee room. The uplevel trim is cloth-accented and carefully fitted but not especially luxurious. The few metallic hints are paint or chrome over molded plastic.

Entering the Camaro's rear seats is a chore because of high doorsills and the absence of quick-slide front-bucket releases. There's adequate legroom if front riders are willing to compromise, but curls are sure to be squashed. Rear passengers view the world through tiny triangular portholes.

Access to the 11.3-cubic-foot trunk is through one of the highest, smallest apertures we've ever encountered. A rear-seat pass-through is provided to accommodate poles, pipes, and spears.

The Camaro's instrument panel is a peculiar mix of retro and modern. Square-cornered tach and speedometer dials juxtapose with electronic fuel-level and trip-info displays. Four secondary gauges mounted at the forward end of the console also hark back to 1969; in forty years, nothing has changed to make that location viable. Providing engine and transmission lubricant temperatures is a nice touch, but no driver in the heat of battle is inclined to search for this information.

OnStar is the only form of navigation offered. In compensation, the list of standard or optional infotainment goodies includes CD and MP3 play capability, Bluetooth, a 245-watt sound system with nine speakers, XM reception, an audio input jack, a USB port, and a wireless interface for portable media players.

The best music source is the Camaro SS's 6.2-liter V-8. Rumble and reverb are entertaining at start-up but appropriately subdued underway. The Tremec six-speed manual's shifter is reasonably light to the touch unless you're in street-race mode, when a heavy hand is required to extract peak performance. So hammered, the 426-hp Camaro SS hustles to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and logs a 13.3-second, 111-mph quarter mile, neatly eclipsing both the Mustang GT and the Challenger SRT8. The thrill peters out at 157 mph when the speed limiter kicks...

As a fellow Odyssey owner, the GM ads don't bother me in the least. In fact, I'd be disappointed if the domestic makers didn't try to convince us that they're better than the foreign competition. I trade my vehicles in very often, generally every other year, and I consider the Big Three every time. However, I haven't found another family vehicle that compares to the Odyssey (my fourth since 2001). GM should try to make the argument that the Acadia, Enclave, Outlook, and Traverse are a better alternative. When I trade in my Odyssey next year cheap car insurance, I'll be taking a very hard look at the Traverse and Acadia (especially since my wife will likely kill me if I stick her with another minivan!). One thing that does bother me about the domestic makers is that prior to their recent difficulties, their prices were absurd. I bought my Mercedes C350 for about $5k less than the Cadillac CTS I really wanted to buy. Even the BMW 335 was less expensive. GM has to drop this dependency on rebates and offer lower total costs of ownership if they want to bring foreign car buyers back into the fold...

In a makeshift ballroom at Ford Field, the Detroit Lions' stadium, a Beatles tribute band is playing I Want to Hold Your Hand, which has got the élite of Motor City moving and shaking, but not the hosts of the black-tie charity ball, William Clay Ford Jr. and his wife Lisa. In fact, the 48-year-old CEO of Ford Motor Co. is getting teased by his brother-in-law about his ineptitude on the dance floor. Turning to a reporter, Bill owns up to it. "You don't want to see that," the Ford scion says with a laugh. But he gets serious when the topic turns to his day job and what lies just around the corner for his employees: a sweeping restructuring that will bring tens of thousands of layoffs. "Honestly, I don't worry about myself," he says. "I mean, I can screw up my life, and it doesn't really matter"--a fair observation for a man who is an heir to a billion-dollar fortune. "But what I worry about is the impact all of this has on others. We're going to do what we have to do, but it's just very, very sad."

Why did Bill Ford, great-grandson of the auto company's founder, take on this responsibility when he could have left it to hired professionals? It helps to understand that he is a man of epic contradictions. His family practically invented the auto industry, not to mention blue-collar consumerism. Brilliant, cantankerous Henry Ford made the first mass-produced car, the Model T, and paid workers enough so they could afford to buy one. That makes great-grandson Bill industrial royalty: he comes from a competitive, dynastic clan that cannot be separated from the nameplate on your Mustang. But he also has a complex, even squishy side; he's a passionate environmentalist who has studied Buddhist philosophy and thinks a lot about the future of the world.

So while he worries about his employees, Ford Motor's boss believes--belatedly, perhaps--that nothing short of a cultural revolution will save the family firm, which, like General Motors, seems to have all but lost a 30-year war with Toyota and other foreign companies for dominance of the U.S. auto market. This week he is unveiling a plan, which he calls the "Way Forward," a last-ditch effort to save the company by taking some big chances. Ford has surrendered market share in the U.S. but figures that a smaller, more innovative company can stir more passion among its customers.

He wants to blow up the company's hierarchical traditions, trim the ranks of bureaucrats and encourage a climate of risk taking. He will go out on a limb with bolder car designs (in fact, one new model is called the Edge). And he will gamble that saving the planet from the car industry is the biggest long-term priority of all, so he will pour billions of dollars into eco-friendly factories and cars. Most notably, the company will dramatically increase production of its hybrid gas-electric models, promising to produce 250,000 a year by 2010, a tenfold increase from last year's output. "The old way of doing things doesn't work," Ford says. "Is [this] risky? Of course it's risky. But I tell you what: Going the way we were going is the highest risk of all."

Toyota Being Green May Help Business in Bad Times

Toyota is weathering the recession far better than its American counterparts because it has been making the fuel-efficient automobile car owners want.

It hardly bears pointing out that during these days of 7.6% unemployment, when the business pages of the local newspaper look more like the obituaries, no industry is doing well — and that includes green business. Wind and solar manufacturers, starved for credit, are cutting back on projects and laying off workers. Whole Foods, the organic food superstore, has seen its stock price drop more than 70% over the past year, and has cut back on planned expansions.

Companies — including Time Inc., which publishes TIME and Time.com — have eliminated their sustainability officers, and the business press seems more concerned with plotting financial panic than with covering the latest green enterprise. (Read TIME's survey of new green technologies.)

So if all that is true, why is Joel Makower feeling (relatively) optimistic? Because despite the current downturn, Makower Toyota Being Green, editor of the website GreenBiz.com and one of the best-known names in the field, has watched sustainability rise from a niche concern to something about which every executive must at least pretend to care. Green businesses may not be flourishing, but business is still going greener. Of course, the recession has restrained sustainability practices and as Makower writes in his just released State of Green Business report, whatever progress is currently being made may not be "addressing planetary problems at sufficient scale and speed." Regardless, he says, the green momentum is still growing, not so much because businesses such as solar power or recycling have become financial titans (they haven't), but because green values — efficiency, reducing waste, managing carbon — have increasingly become standard practice for any smart business. "It's really becoming business as usual," says Makower. "These are practices that don't go away during a recession." Quite the opposite. Wasteful processes that might have mattered little in a booming economy could doom a company when the economic pie starts shrinking. Take the auto industry. Toyota is weathering the recession far better than its American counterparts not just because it has been making the fuel-efficient automobile customers wanted — though that helped a great deal — but because the Japanese giant makes a fetish out of efficiency. (The term for it in Japanese is kaizen, or continual improvement.) Even Wal-Mart, once environmental Enemy Number One, has made its Byzantine supply chain greener and more efficient — and spreading those values to its network of suppliers. The message is sinking in: a 2008 survey by Johnson Controls found that 72% of building managers are now paying attention to energy efficiency, up 10% from the year before. "We're finally coming to grips with the financial and environmental cost of waste," says Makower. "It's exciting the amount of innovation that's coming out of this." (Read TIME's top 10 green stories of 2008.)

Energy efficiency and waste reduction should be no-brainers — both factors contribute directly to the bottom line. But an even more encouraging trend from 2008 is the inclusion of a company's carbon footprint in the calculation of its financial targets. Businesses now increasingly measure and work to minimize their carbon footprint, even reporting their efforts in publications like the Carbon Disclosure Project. In part, that's because CEOs are simply greener today than they've ever been, but also because, with a new President in the White House promising carbon cap-and-trade legislation and the world working to negotiate a broader successor to the Kyoto Protocol, smart companies know that managing carbon will soon become a fiduciary responsibility. "[Executives] who don't will soon go way," says Makower. "This is now the price of doing business."

So if green isn't crashing, as many believe, why does Makower insist the "glass is half full?" Just as it is in the political sphere, the pace of change in business isn't anywhere near fast enough to meet the challenge posed by climate change, dwindling resources and myriad other environmental problems. Makower notes that carbon intensity — the amount of greenhouse gases emitted per unit of GDP — decreased by 0.6% in 2008, the smallest decrease since 2002. (The faster carbon intensity decreases, the more output businesses get for their carbon.) The failure of green business so far to produce a Google-like success story — a company that crushes in the stock market — hasn't helped either. "We're not moving the needle fast enough when it comes to climate, toxicity, energy use," says Makower.

In 2009, Makower says, the chief impediment to green business will be a lack of cash — just as it is for the rest of us. And like the rest of us, green businesses will be looking to Washington for a savior, hoping that President Barack Obama's promises to use stimulus spending to make the U.S. economy greener, leaner and cleaner was more than idle campaign talk. "If there's one thing I'd like to see from the Administration, it's a vision for what the green economy will look like," Makower says. "But right now, we're in uncharted territory."

New Nissan GT-R spec V features include a carbon fiber

The GT-R SpecV’s new exterior features include a carbon fiber rear spoiler, a carbon fiber grille, and carbon fiber brake ducts. The SpecV is available exclusively in Ultimate Black Opal (RP) body color. Inside, the SpecV’s unique two-seat interior (non-SpecV GT-R models also include a two-place rear seat) offers special Recaro carbon fiber bucket seats, while carbon fiber insets embellish the rear center storage box, instrument panel and other trim areas.

Proton are continuing their assault on the Thai market with the Persona CNG. The Persona enters a very very tough segment, with existing models have very commanding positions. We can't go far here without comparisons to the almost bulletproof Vios and the equally solid City, and this is what the Persona faces.

So does it stand a chance? Who is going to buy a Malaysian Proton, ahead of locally assembled and safe options like the Toyota and Honda. Read on to find out....

The Persona is based on the Gen 2 platform, and shares much from the 5-door car's parts bin. The addition of a boot, and some softening of the suspension are the main differences here.

Actually, the Proton Persona CNG is probably not going to shake up the motoring industry in Thailand. Toyota and Honda sales and marketing teams are unlikely to miss any sleep over the addition to the market either. But Proton will sell Persona's in Thailand, and here's why:
CNG

The first major advantage the Persona CNG has over competitors is the CNG tank bolted into the boot. There aren't too many new cars out there with CNG as an option, and the Proton is the first in this segment.

The Campro IAFM engine in the Persona CNG can take either regular petrol, an E20 ethanol-petrol mix as well as CNG (compressed natural gas). CNG is basically the fuel that NGV cars such as taxis use in Malaysia.

Proton targets to sell 500 units a month of the Persona CNG in Thailand. With many Malaysians considering NGV conversions right now, it would be timely to introduce the Persona CNG into the Malaysian market soon.

A car that comes with CNG fueling from the factory would be easier on the owner’s pocket as the cost of conversion is factored into the hire purchase loan, plus it is included in the manufacturer warranty.

Although the price of fuel like Gasohol 91, 95 and E20 have dropped substantially over the past few months, there is still good reason to opt for CNG. The price of CNG has been fixed at just THB 8.50 per Kg, this will equate to lower fuel costs.

The Persona CNG still has a 50 litre fuel tank for the E20 (or Gasohol 91/95) if you get tired queueing with the taxis for CNG, or if you wish to extend your range. At least the option is still there.

Of course it is possible to retro-fit a CNG installation in a City or Vios, but this will add expense and void your warranty. With the Persona you are getting the CNG kit from the start, and it is backed by Proton.
Price

The second major advantage that the Persona has over everything else in the segment is the price. THB 549,000 is a competitive price point. I mean, even if you ignored the fact that this thing included CNG, this would represent decent value. Factor in the CNG kit, and it is starting to look like a bargain.

The Persona CNG comes in 3 specifications the Medium Line with manual transmission at THB 549,000, the Medium Line with 4-speed automatic for THB 584,000 and the top-spec High Line costing THB 629,000.

From here on I'm going to completely ignore the Medium Line cars. They do come equipped with a driver's airbag as standard (come on Honda and Toyota!), but they lack ABS, EBD and seat belt pre-tensioners from the High Line. So assuming that we all care enough about safety to shell out an extra THB 80,000 for these features, let's see how the Proton Persona CNG High Line AT stacks up against the competition.
Engine

The Persona CNG is powered by a 1,597 cc DOHC Campro engine. The engine provides 110 hp which is nothing special. This is on-par with the Vios and Tiida, but is eclipsed by the 1.5 litre Honda unit in the City that produces 120 hp. Still I would say that Proton aren't too far behind here. The engine is a modern unit with multi-point fuel injection, and will no doubt offer enough for the purpose it was designed for. (This is not a racing car guys.)
Safety

Here the Persona CNG is a bit of a surprise. The High Line has two airbags, ABS, EBD and seat belt pre-tensioners. A City with dual airbags will set you back THB 644,000.

I haven't seen any crash test results for this car yet, but the same goes for both Toyota Vios and City.
Quality

Vios and City win. The end. Well... yes and no. While the Proton will have a hard job living with the quality of the competition, there are some nice touches on the Persona that belie its price. Besides, are a few rough edges going to put you off on a car in this price range.
Price

Here is where things get a little more complex. Remember, the Proton has CNG and the others don't. But the Proton is still cheaper to begin with. The Persona CNG is easily the cheapest of the three, and Nissan's Tiida is also a tad higher with dual airbag models starting at around THB 669,000.

However, you might assume that the cheaper price of the Proton Persona suggests that they have cut back on features, but it doesn't seem to be the case. The Persona has 60/40 split folding rear seats as standard, disc brakes all around, rear-parking sensors, steering-wheel audio controls, electric windows (front), electric mirrors, MP3, fog lamps, etc.

So they didn't skimp on equipment.

And the Persona is larger than the City in all dimensions except height. The wheelbase is 50 mm longer, and the car is also wider and longer than the City.

Mazda 3 2010 Hatchback Shots

During the frenzy of the 2010 Mazda 3 debut last week we overlooked Mazda’s newest batch of “spy shots” of the 2010 Mazda 3 hatchback testing alongside of the 2010 Mazda 3 sedan.

Per prototype clad norms it is hard to distinguish detail from cladding on the prototype shots but we can already see the hatchback shape complimenting the new Mazda 3 styling elements very well.

For example, notice how the taillights are stretched and wrap around the rear of the 2010 Mazda 3 hatchback versus the more squared off rear end of the sedan. The rear spoiler on the hatchback also appears much more pronounced than previous versions. Should Mazda continue the tradition started with the first generation Mazda 3 you will see the 2010 Mazda 3 hatchback offer the 2.5-Liter four-cylinder 167 hp motor as the only engine option.

The 2010 Mazda 3 hatchback is expected to appear at the December 2nd Bologna Motor Show in Italy.

GM says to make Chevrolet Volt in China by 2011

Shanghai, October 17 (Gasgoo.com) General Motors (GM) will introduce its EREV (extended range electric vehicle) Chevrolet Volt to China for production by 2011 to meet the Chinese market demand, Nanfang Daily reported, citing Bob Lutz, GM vice chairman of product development.

Bob Lutz said, Chinese elements were well considered in the design of Chevrolet Volt, which indicates the electric automobile has entered a new stage. And China will be a big market for electric vehicles.

It is reported that Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in series hybrid vehicle by GM, is expected to begin production in 2010.

The vehicle is designed to run purely on electricity from on-board batteries for up to 64km. With the use of a small internal combustion engine driving a generator to resupply the batteries, the vehicle’s range is potentially increased to 579km on the highway (and which can be extended for very long trips by conventional refueling).

Bob Lutz said that Volt, different from the traditional electric vehicles, surely will have a huge market as it solves customers’ concern about driving distance. But the low availability of electric auto parts for the car’s volume production will lead to high price of the first generation Volt.

Bob Lutz is confident about the prospects of the electric vehicles. He said GM has lagged behind Toyota which has promoted its hybrids like Prius for several years. Thailand! 2009 Honda City

Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co., Ltd. has started selling the all-new Honda City in Thailand today, honda civic hybrid, hybrid cars price. It will be sold in Thailand for between 524,000 to 694,000 Thai baht. We don’t have much details on the wheelbase and some other details yet.

The new Honda City is powered by solely by a 1.5 liter i-VTEC engine mated to either a 5-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual It is 4,395mm long, 1,695mm wide and 1,470mm tall, so it is slightly longer (+5mm), new car purchase, slightly wider (+5mm) but not as tall (-25mm) as the previous model. Making it wider and not as high reduces the whole hatchback with a boot tagged on look that the City it replaces had.

It’s quite an attractive new car purchase and the lines flow alot smoother than the model it replaces. I hope that for those who don’t fancy the grille at the front all that much (as expressed in some previous posts), there will be a replacement Modulo grille that they can opt for. This was an option that Accord owners who preferred not having an “empty” grille - they could opt for a Modulo grille that had a little bar running through it.

UPDATE: More photos including high resolution photos of the new Honda City have been added after the jump. The new City is sold in Thailand in three variants: S, V and SV. The S and V variants come with a beige interior while the top of the line SV model comes with a dark interior and all 3 variants also come with different alloy wheel designs.

Six colours are available - Habanero Red Pearl, Deep Lapis Blue Metallic, Alabaster Metallic, Polished Metal Metallic and Bold Beige Metallic and Crystal Black Pearl. Sadly white is not available but maybe it will be in Malaysia if Honda Malaysia deems it as a potentially popular colour, which I think it would.

A new set of photos of the new 2009 Honda City have been released, this time a left hand drive version as a preview to the car’s official European unveiling at the Istanbul Motor Show this October 2008.

The European market Honda City will be fitted with a 100 PS 1.4 liter i-VTEC engine mated to a 5-speed transmission, and apparently the new City - like its European Jazz and Civic hatch siblings - will feature a 6-speed i-SHIFT automated manual transmission with steering-mounted paddle shifts will serve those who do not want to bother with a manual clutch on a daily basis.

The 5-speed manual transmission has been improved over the previous version, now featuring a carbon synchromesh for smoother gear changes as well a new set of gear ratios optimised for the new engine credit report.

Other than the left hand drive interior, something new shown with this new set of photos is the fact that the car features an automatic climate control system with digital display instead of the three-knob manual air conditioning controls that were shown in the previous set of photos. The exterior also looks a little different, with some extra side strips somehow giving the car a more stout look. Frankly I prefer the Asian version’s exterior credit report.

While I've accepted there to be a certain amount of this in my life, which is probably a good thing, my tolerance for these chores begins to wane when it occupies the majority of my time in a given stretch. Regular movie watching has been down as a result; what little of it I've done has been 20 minutes here, 40 minutes there. But it's absolutely critical that I squeeze in those little bits of movie-watching, no matter the kind of movie, because sometimes the right movie at the right (or wrong) time is just what I need. Of course, it's impossible to know it until I've seen it and internalized it. You never know when that therapeutic experience of cinema will sneak up. Some of these movies just take your mind off things, providing necessary reprieve and absurdity to counter all the reality of life. Others penetrate the very depths of your consciousness, impacting how you view and partake in all of those daily rituals. Sometimes they can even help one to appreciate those pesky errands, schedules, and jobs a little more.

Not long ago, Isuzu and General Motors embarked upon a joint development venture to produce compact pickup trucks. Isuzu intended to build a truck called the D-Max to sell in Thailand. GM, meanwhile, manufactured its own versions — the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon — to sell in the United States. Isuzu sells two pickup in the U.S., the i-290 (which is listed separately in the cars.com Research section) and holds a 2.9-liter four-cylinder, and the i-370 that has a 242-horsepower, 3.7-liter inline-five-cylinder. These pickups join Isuzu's only remaining model in the U.S. market: the Ascender sport utility vehicle, which is also based on a GM product. Serving as the uplevel i-series model, the i-370 features standard CD/MP3 player, tilt steering wheel and cruise control. With the appropriate equipment, the i-370 has a 1,338-pound payload rating and can tow up to 4,000 pounds.

Exterior
These pickups were developed in a joint venture, so the overall appearance of the i-370 is similar to the Colorado and Canyon. Isuzu's version features a bold grille made up of three wide bars: one horizontal and two vertical. Whereas the four-cylinder i-290 comes only in extended-cab form with two-wheel drive, the i-370 is a crew-cab pickup with Insta-Trac four-wheel drive. Four conventional front-hinged doors are installed. The i-370 has 15-inch tires on aluminum wheels.

Interior
Up to five occupants can fit inside the i-370 Crew Cab. Front bucket seats flank a center console. Standard equipment includes air conditioning; fabric seat upholstery; carpeting; a stereo system with a CD/MP3 player; remote keyless entry; cruise control; a tilt steering column; and power windows, locks and mirrors. Power heated front seats, leather-appointed interior trim and an in-dash six-CD changer are included in the Limited Package.

Under the Hood
The i-370's 3.5-liter inline-five-cylinder develops 242 hp and 242 pounds-feet of torque. A four-speed-automatic transmission is standard. The i-370 comes with Insta-Trac four-wheel drive, which permits shifting between 2WD and 4WD High at the touch of a button while under way.

Ford backs federal loans Ford Motor

Ford Motor Co. Executive Chairman Bill Ford voiced his support Friday for government loans for the auto industry and growing attention on the nation’s lack of energy policy.

Bill Ford has been largely out of the limelight since hiring CEO Alan Mulally in September 2006. But he made his remarks outside of Ford Motor Co.’s world headquarters in Dearborn, where the company was hosting a centennial celebration event for the Model T.
Ford, the great-grandson of company founder Henry Ford, was on hand to greet Model T owners and sign autographs.

Ford Motor has been intensely lobbying presidential candidates and others in Congress for $25 billion to $50 billion in government loans, which some have labeled a bailout.

Bill Ford took offense to that characterization, arguing that the money is important to help the U.S. auto industry transition to meet tougher regulations imposed by Congress and shifting demands of consumers, who are seeking vehicles that are more fuel efficient and powered by alternative fuels and electricity.

The money, Ford said, might give Ford “breathing room” because the loans might mean the difference between billions of dollars in loans at “a single-digit interest rate” and “a double-digit interest rate.”

The money, he added, would also ease the way for Ford “to go as absolutely fast as we can” to develop alternative-powered vehicles.

Ford, who declined to state his preference in the U.S. presidential elections, also said he was heartened that the candidates had energy policy at the top of their discussion lists. He said a sound national energy policy is overdue.

Given the infrastructure needed to support any single future direction of the auto industry, he said, government must help determine the most desirable path for our nation — and its automakers.

“It’s a government’s role,” he said, “to be leading that debate.”
